MARBLE IN YOUR BATHROOM: DO'S AND DON'TS
Marble is one of the most sophisticated and beautiful materials you can have in your bathroom. This natural stone has been used since ancient times and remains a symbol of elegance. It is a very durable natural product with a luxurious appearance. At the same time, it is a porous material and you have to be careful with stains. With this guide, you'll have all the tips you need to care for your marble!
Marble is beloved. For centuries it has been used to make amazing sculptures, furniture and buildings: from the Taj Mahal to the Sacred Heart. Marble is a natural stone that is mined all over the world. It is a difficult job, largely done by Mother Nature. Marble is created by transforming limestone. The impurities in the original limestone are deformed to give rise to the veins and coloured spots that are so characteristic of marble. In addition to its beautiful marks, the beauty of marble is that it lasts a lifetime. It is very durable - provided you look after it properly. Because of its appearance and properties, marble is perfect for bathroom furniture. At Furnified you will find basins such as Juliette, George and Remy in many different marble colours. This way, you will always have a washbasin that matches your taste and style!
The different types of marble
Marble comes in over a thousand unique types, making it one of the most versatile natural stones in the world. Each of them is available in dozens of different colours, which means that the possibilities are almost endless. The type depends mainly on the region from which it is extracted. For example, there is white Carrara marble from Italy, black Nero Marquina marble from Spain, green from India and brown Dark Emperador from Spain. But red, pink, purple and blue marbles are also available. Besides the colour, marble gives your interior a natural touch. It creates a peaceful and soft atmosphere.
Properties of marble
Marble consists of calcium carbonate. Therefore, this natural stone is porous by nature. This means that marble can easily retain stains from various substances; it is also sensitive to scratches. If you have marble furniture, be very careful with liquids such as vinegar, lemon juice or fruit juice. They make the surface dull. Water can also cause marks on the material: not very nice either. These liquids can cause permanent stains, so you have to be very careful with them. It is precisely because of this vulnerability that marble is a poor conductor of heat: it is always cool to the touch. Marble does not conduct heat well, so be careful with hot liquids or styling tools. Do not place them directly on the marble to avoid dulling.
Natural irregularities
Marble is a natural product. This material owes its unique appearance to the imperfections created by nature. Often, despite polishing, there are still unevennesses and hollows on the top. Do not confuse these small irregularities with the potentially damaging irregularities of marble. These irregularities make each piece of marble unique in its own way. So please be aware that small cracks, dents and roughness in marble do not pose a risk to the quality and longevity of your Furnified bathroom furniture.
How do I maintain marble bathroom furniture?
Marble furniture has a shiny polish that protects it. However, we advise you to treat the top with an impregnating agent. This treatment gives the marble an extra layer of protection against acids, moisture and dirt. Repeat this treatment once every four months and follow the instructions of the impregnating agent. In addition, to keep marble looking good, it is important to clean it regularly and to do so in the right way.
How do I clean marble?
First of all, make sure you have the right cleaning products, such as a special marble spray. Green soap is also a good option. Absolutely avoid acidic products such as Glassex, Dreft and wet wipes: they are too aggressive for porous marble. As marble is sensitive to scratches, it is best not to use scouring pads or sponges and, above all, never rub too hard. Do you want to clean your marble furniture thoroughly? Then follow these steps: a bucket with warm water, a soft cloth or sponge, green soap or a special marble cleaner, clean water and a dry cloth. And off you go, get to work!
How to clean marble
First step: make a lather of green soap, soda or marble cleaner. It is better to use too little detergent than too much! If you use too much green soap, a thin oily layer will remain on the marble. Dirt and dust can adhere more easily, which means that the marble will get dirty faster. Then clean the marble thoroughly with soapy water and a cloth or sponge (not a scouring sponge). Do not rub too hard to avoid scratching. Wipe the surface in a circular motion. Wipe the marble with clean water so that no residue remains from the soapy water you used. Finally, dry the marble thoroughly with a dry cloth or chamois fabric.
Removing stains from marble
Preventiong is better than curing, so be careful with liquids and heat. Does your marble table top have a stain? Then take immediate action and don't let the stain soak in. Stains on marble can be removed very well with soda dissolved in water. Let the paste soak in for a while, then rinse with clean water. Don't forget to rub it dry with a chamois or soft cloth. Because even a drop of water leaves a stain. A stubborn stain persists? Try removing it carefully with a little hydrogen peroxide (but not on dark marble, it can discolour it!)
What about scratches?
Oh no, have you spotted a scratch in the marble of your favourite washbasin cabinet? Unfortunately, these scratches are not so easy to remove. Small superficial scratches are often less visible if you clean the marble as described above. Is there a deeper scratch on the surface? Then you can try to remove it with very fine sandpaper. But be careful not to make any more scratches.
With these tips, your marble bathroom furniture from Furnified will stay beautiful for a long time. In addition to a beautiful impression, a marble bathroom cabinet is a lasting design element in your home. Have fun with it! Do you have any questions about the maintenance of marble? We are happy to help you further!
